Change happens in stages, and sometimes more slowly or rapidly than in others. After the leaps and bounds, construction seemed to slow for a couple weeks while the more tedious work of installing the plumbing was done. Then suddenly, all the pipes were in, and the workers were preparing the ground for the rest of the cement! Now the whole foundation is laid, and the beams for the second floor have been brought in. Soon even the sidewalks will be poured.
We’ve been watching foundations being laid in stages among our families here in Shoreline, too. One of the most touching moments approaching Christmas is seeing the way one of our newer families has been growing together. Now that they’re in a stable environment with so many people pouring out love for them they have grown closer. When the family first arrived, the father seemed to have a much stronger relationship with his young son than with his quiet older daughter. Staff wondered how we could support that growth in their relationship, and made a point of praying regularly for this family.
After distributing Adopt-A-Family gifts and the accompanying gift cards, we heard a touching answer to prayer. The dad used the gift card meant as a gift solely for him to get extra Christmas presents for his daughter instead. He gave her presents with the smaller gift card designated for her. When she received the clothes, toys, and card, she decided she didn’t want anything else and just wanted to give back to her dad. So she went out and bought him a gift with her own card! It’s touching to see the ways they have been growing together and choosing to give instead of take, building both strong foundations and new structures to take refuge in.
Please join us in prayer for all of our families this Christmas, that they would be brought closer together by all the pieces of hope in their lives, by their hearts to care for one another, and by the encouragement the community has offered in such abundant generosity this year and this Christmas. We hope you’ll pray as well for the families of the workers making Building B happen, whose work will ultimately mean we can celebrate more moments of families coming together in the years to come.
